Understanding A Rate Change Displayed on a Utility Bill

Category: Uncategorized

Most bills will bridge from mid-month to mid-month. It is uncommon for a bill cycle to capture data exactly from the 1st of the month to the last day of the month. When a rate change goes into effect on the 1st of a month, the first printed bill will display calculations for before and after the rate change.

In the example below, the bill covers a 29 day period, 9/18 to 10/17:

  • 9/18 – 9/30 = 13 days on the old rate
  • 10/1 – 10/17 = 16 days on the new rate

The base rate is prorated as well as the tiered rates.

Base Rate:

  • Old rate $32.85 ¸ 29 days = $1.132 x 13 days = 14.725 or $14.73
  • New rate $37.10 ¸ 29 days = $1.279 x 16 days = 20.4689 or $20.47

Usage:  10 kg total

Tier 1     (1st 7 kg)         7 kg ÷ 29 days = .241379 kg per day

Days on Old rate        .241379 x 13 days = 3.137927 kg

                                        3.138 kg x $2.05 = $6.44

Days on New Rate     .241379 x 16 days = 3.862064 kg

                                        3.862064 kg x $2.30 = $8.88

Tier 2    (8-15kg)          3 kg ÷ 29 days = .103448 kg per day

Days on Old Rate       .103448 x 13 days = 1.3448

                                             1.34 kg x $3.10 = $4.15

                                             .103448 x 16 = 1.6551

                                             1.66 kg x $3.45 = $5.73
