How to Report a Downed Power Line

Power line safety is critical—for you, your neighbors, and first responders.
If you see a downed power line, take immediate precautions and report it right away. The steps below can help you stay safe and ensure the proper response.

Power Line Safety Tips

  • Stay at least 50 feet away from any downed power lines and anything in contact with them, such as trees, fences, or vehicles.

  • Do not touch someone who is in contact with a downed line—call 911 immediately.

  • Shuffle away from the area using small steps to avoid electric shock.

  • Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring—this can cause dangerous back feed and injure utility crews.

How to Report a Downed Power Line

  • For emergencies or if police are needed to direct traffic, call 911.

  • For non-emergency reports, contact the City of Georgetown’s Utility Call Center at 512-930-3640.
