How can I or my family prepare for emergencies?
Emergency Management Officials throughout the nation have one key message for the public – as much as you are able, be personally prepared for emergencies.
Be Informed
Register for the following programs (where relevant) to be notified of emergencies and to allow emergency responders to have basic emergency information about you in an emergency:
• Warn Central Texas - Receive emergency warnings and weather alerts
• Smart911 - Provide personal information to emergency responders
• STEAR - A registry for people who have medical and other functional needs
• Subscribe to social media issued by the City of Georgetown Public Information Office on X (Twitter), Facebook, NextDoor and emails to receive specific information and updates on road closures / conditions, power outage etc.
Visit the Georgetown Weekly Sign Up website to sign up for newsletters.
Make a Plan
- Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area.
- Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated.
- Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.
Build a Personal Supplies Kit
Have enough supplies on hand to be able to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours of a disaster. This allows first responders to work to clear paths to access and take care of critical life safety emergencies.
