How do I request a pedestrian / school crossing? Can I request a crossing guard for school children?

Requesting a Pedestrian or School Crossing in Georgetown ISD

Overview

If you would like a pedestrian or school crossing installed or want to request a crossing guard for students, there is a formal evaluation process that must be followed. Georgetown ISD (GISD) provides all crossing guards but marked school crossings can only be installed after a safety study is completed according to Texas state guidelines.

Requesting a new pedestrian or school crossing involves several key steps:

Safety Evaluation Required

  • If there is no existing marked crossing, a safety study must be conducted following the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD). The study reviews traffic volume, pedestrian activity, roadway characteristics, visibility, and overall safety.

Approval for Marked Crossing

  • Only after the safety study determines a crossing is warranted can it be officially marked.

Crossing Guards Provided by GISD

  • Once a school crossing is approved and marked, Georgetown ISD provides all crossing guards at that location.

Submitting a Request

  • If you believe a location needs a school crossing or a crossing guard, submit a request through GISD or the local traffic authority. The request triggers the required safety assessment to ensure all decisions follow state standards and prioritize student safety.
