What are the parts of a hydrant that has a meter?

Hydrant Meter Use and Components

Overview

The Water Department installs locks on top of hydrants to prevent unauthorized use.

For hydrants equipped with meters, water must be activated at the curb stop valve side. Contractors are required to install backflow prevention devices before using a hydrant meter.

The customer’s ball valve on the backflow preventer controls water flow. To allow water to pass through, both handles must be aligned parallel to the backflow device.

Main Components of a Hydrant with a Meter

A hydrant meter setup typically includes:

  • Fire Hydrant – The main water access point
  • Operating Nut (Top Nut) – Used to open/close the hydrant (secured with a lock)
  • Hydrant Meter – Measures water usage
  • Backflow Preventer – Protects the public water supply from contamination
  • Ball Valve (Curb Stop Valve) – Controls water flow into the system
  • Chains and Locks – Prevent unauthorized removal or tampering

The image shows a fire hydrant connected to a meter assembly. The setup includes a locked operating nut on top of the hydrant, a blue hydrant meter attached to the outlet, a backflow preventer, and a ball valve located near the curb stop. Chains and locks are visible to prevent tampering.
