Drone Regulations and Use

Overview

Drone operations within the City of Georgetown are regulated by federal and state law. The City of Georgetown does not have local ordinances governing drone use. Anyone operating a drone in Georgetown is responsible for complying with all applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements and Texas law.

Types of Drone Operations

There are two general categories of drone operations:

  • Some drones must be registered with the FAA.

  • Recreational operators are required to complete the FAA's Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST).

  • Commercial and other non-recreational operators must comply with FAA Part 107 requirements, including obtaining a Remote Pilot Certificate.

Texas Law

The use of unmanned aircraft in Texas is governed by Texas Government Code, Chapter 423 – Use of Unmanned Aircraft.

Chapter 423 includes provisions regarding:

  • Lawful uses of unmanned aircraft

  • Prohibited uses

  • Criminal offenses related to unlawful drone operations

City of Georgetown Regulations

The City of Georgetown does not have ordinances regulating drone use.

Drone operators must follow all applicable federal and state laws when operating within the city.
