Garage Sale Sign Regulations

Overview

Residents may use temporary signs to advertise a garage or yard sale, but all signs must comply with the City of Georgetown's sign regulations. Signs placed in prohibited locations may be removed by the City.

Garage Sale Sign Requirements

Garage sale signs must meet the following requirements:

  • Signs may not exceed 4 square feet in size.

  • Signs may be placed on the property where the garage sale is being held.

  • Off-site signs are permitted only with the permission of the property owner where the sign is placed.

  • Off-site signs must be located within 1,000 feet of the garage sale location.

Where Garage Sale Signs Cannot Be Placed

Garage sale signs may not be attached to:

  • Utility poles

  • Street signs

  • Stop signs

  • Traffic control devices

Signs must be placed on private property and may not be placed in the public right-of-way.

As a general guideline, signs should be located:

  • At least 10 feet from the curb on City streets.

  • At least 25 feet from the curb on state highways.

Additional Information

The public right-of-way generally includes the area between the street and adjacent private property. Placing signs within the public right-of-way is prohibited.

If you see a garage sale sign that has been placed in violation of these regulations, you may report it to the City through Code Compliance or askGTX.
