Pet waste left on sidewalks, yards, and parks can be carried by rainwater into storm drains, which flow directly into local rivers and streams. As it decomposes, pet waste contributes bacteria and other pollutants that negatively impact water quality and public health. While wildlife contributions cannot be controlled, responsible pet ownership plays an important role in reducing preventable pollution.

Community participation is essential in maintaining clean and safe public spaces. By properly disposing of pet waste, residents help reduce bacterial contamination and protect the environment for everyone.

What You Can Do

To help keep Georgetown’s waterways clean, pet owners are encouraged to:

• Always scoop pet waste at home, in parks, and in public areas

• Dispose of bagged waste properly in trash carts and never in storm drains

• Use biodegradable bags when possible to reduce environmental impact

• Flush unbagged pet waste down the toilet at home, if appropriate for your plumbing system

• Consider composting pet waste as a soil amendment (do not use in vegetable gardens or edible crops)
