What should I not put down the drain or toilet?

Simple Habits for Cleaner Water and Healthier Communities

Overview:

Simple everyday choices can help keep our water clean, protect public health, and prevent costly plumbing problems. By disposing of waste properly and using environmentally responsible products, we all play a role in maintaining a safe and efficient wastewater system.

Keeping our water systems clean starts at home. What goes down your drain or toilet has a direct impact on public health, the environment, and the condition of our wastewater infrastructure.

Never pour the following items down the drain or toilet:

  • Wipes, even those labeled “flushable” as they do not break down like toilet paper and can clog municipal and septic systems.

  • Fats, oils, and grease, including cooking oil, pan drippings, gravy, bacon grease, lard, shortening, butter, margarine, salad dressings, mayonnaise, creams, and sauces.

Instead, follow these safe disposal practices:

  • Recycle used cooking oil whenever possible by contacting a local cooking oil recycler for drop-off locations.

  • If recycling is not available, check with your local household hazardous waste program for proper disposal options.

  • As a last resort, seal grease or oil in a container and place it in the trash.

Adopt simple habits to prevent clogs and pollution:

  • Use a paper towel to wipe grease from dishes and cookware before washing; dispose of it in the trash. (Grease from cloth towels can enter the wastewater system during laundering.)

  • Install a sink strainer to catch food scraps and dispose of them in the trash or compost them when possible.

  • Choose environmentally safe cleaning products, such as those labeled with the EPA Safer Choice certification.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Disposal

By taking these steps, you help protect our waterways, reduce strain on wastewater systems, and avoid expensive plumbing repairs.
