Temporary Signs for Temporary Events
Overview:
Temporary signs can help advertise local events, but they must follow certain rules. These rules help keep roads safe, protect property, and make sure signs do not create hazards.
Where Temporary Signs Can Be Placed

Signs may not be placed in rights-of-way owned by the Texas Department of Transportation

Signs placed on private property must have written permission from the property owner

Signs must be placed at least three (3) feet from the edge of the pavement or curb
Size and Height Rules

Signs placed in public rights-of-way may be no larger than four (4) square feet

Signs placed in public rights-of-way may be no taller than three (3) feet from the ground

Signs placed on private property must follow the size and height rules for that zoning district
How Long Signs Can Stay Up

Signs in public rights-of-way may be placed no more than 24 hours before the event begins

Signs in public rights-of-way must be removed within 24 hours after the event ends

Signs on private property may be placed up to 15 days before the event

Signs on private property must be removed within 3 days after the event ends

No temporary event sign may remain in place longer than 30 days total
Other Important Restrictions

Signs must not block visibility or create safety risks for drivers or pedestrians

Signs may not have lighting, balloons, streamers, or other attached materials

Signs may not be attached to bridges, traffic signs, official sign supports, light poles, or other roadway structures

Event sponsors may be listed on the sign, but the event itself must be the main message

Temporary signs for the same event may only be placed once every six months

Signs for the same event must be placed at least 100 yards apart along a street right-of-way
