Are There Rules for Landscaping Around Utility Boxes?

Landscaping Guidelines Near Utility Equipment

Overview:
Landscaping must be planned carefully so utility workers can reach equipment and drivers can see clearly at intersections. Keeping these areas clear helps prevent accidents and allows quick repairs.

Landscaping must also follow the city’s traffic safety standards in its Code of Ordinances - Sec. 8.06.030.  Plants and landscaping should not block the view where roads, driveways, access easements, paths, or sidewalks meet.

Maintain Access to Utility Equipment

  • Do not plant trees or shrubs near transformer boxes

  • Keep at least 10 feet clear in front of transformer doors

  • Leave 3–5 feet of space on the sides and back

  • Make sure plants do not block views at intersections or driveways

Important

  • Utilities may remove plants or other objects that block access to equipment.
  • Customers are not allowed to paint their transformer box.

Why It Matters

  • Properly planned landscaping helps keep utility workers, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safe while ensuring quick access to essential equipment.
