Refrigerated Food: When to Save It and When to Throw It Out

According to the USDA, a refrigerator will keep food safe for up to four hours during a power outage if the door stays closed.

  • Follow these steps:

    • Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible.

  • Food quality may be reduced after refreezing, but it may still be safe.
